Press Release

At COP29 Azerbaijan, discussions on creating a future-ready international financial framework and enhancing partnerships with SIDS leaders highlighted the day’s focus on climate action and innovation.

The Secretariat of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) hosted a side event on climate and disaster resilience during COP29 in Azerbaijan. The event brought together global leaders and experts to address the pressing need for enhanced strategies in building resilience to climate change and reducing disaster risks in vulnerable regions.

The first session, moderated by Edmund Jackson, featured keynote addresses from ASG Cristelle Pratt of the OACPS, L. O’Reilly Lewis of the CDB, and Juan Carlos Edo Montfort, Team Leader at DG-INTPA, European Commission. They spoke about the importance of collaborative approaches to financing and implementing resilience-building initiatives.

The second session showcased the power of women in leadership with an all-female panel comprising Valerie Isaacs, Senior Programme Manager at the CDB, Dr. Pendo Maro, Team Leader of the Intra-ACP Disaster Risk Reduction Programme, and Lisa Kingsberry of the Pacific Community. This panel emphasized innovative solutions and the role of inclusive partnerships in advancing disaster resilience.

The event served as a platform to exchange best practices and galvanize global action, reaffirming the commitment of the OACPS and CDB to fostering sustainable development for their member states.
