Press Release

H.E. Cheryl Bazard, representing The Bahamas as Chair of the OACPS SIDS Forum, led a high-level roundtable in preparation for COP29, bringing together global partners to discuss critical climate change issues and emphasize the need for immediate action.

H.E. Cheryl Bazard, representing The Bahamas as Chair of the OACPS Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Forum, had the distinct honour of leading the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) High-Level Roundtable. The forum, held in preparation for COP29, brought together key international partners including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), European Commission, European External Action Service (EEAS), the COP26 and COP30 Presidencies, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), the Independent Alliance of Latin America and the Caribbean (AILAC), the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the Permanent Interstates Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS), the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), and the University of the South-Pacific.

The discussions underscored several crucial messages: time is running out, climate change poses a threat to global security, developed nations must fulfill their pledges, transparency is critical, and practical goals for financing and access to resources are essential. This forum fostered a rich exchange of ideas, deepening understanding and identifying areas for possible convergence.

As climate change challenges persist, the forum emphasized the need to turn discussions into action. The event solidified The Bahamas’ leadership role in advocating for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and advancing the global climate agenda.
