Ambassador H.E. Cheryl Bazard presents Letters of Credence to President Charles Michel of the European Council, highlighting the Bahamas-EU partnership and discussing key areas of collaboration.
The Commonwealth of The Bahamas’ Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union, H.E. Cheryl Bazard KC, officially presented her Letters of Credence to the President of the European Council, Mr. Charles Michel, at a ceremony held in Brussels on 13 February, 2024.
A bilateral meeting was held within the framework of the ceremony.President Michel congratulated Ambassador Bazard on her appointment and made mention of several areas including the financial services sector, financial architecture, the development of the economy and both parties’ role in seeking a solution to the Haitian crisis.
Ambassador Bazard conveyed warm greetings and well-wishes on behalf of the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. She also conveyed the appreciation of the Government and people of The Bahamas for the development assistance provided by the European Union to The Bahamas over the years, which has made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the country.
Ambassador Bazard highlighted the impact of blacklisting, not only on the financial services sector but also the knock-on effects in the area of reinsurance and the increased local insurance rates, and a drastic reduction in the availability of coverage, as repercussions for our country. Ambassador Bazard noted that it is an antithesis to the SDG 30 Goals especially given the devastating effect of climate disasters on The Bahamas.
During the meeting, both sides jointly recognized the profound importance of The Bahamas’ ties with the European Union, framing the bond as a strategic and multifaceted partnership.
In conclusion, both sides renewed their commitment to continuing cooperation and openness to constructive dialogue with the aim of enhancing and fortifying the relationship between the European Union and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
