Ambassador H.E. Cheryl Bazard participated in an IDLO event discussing the role of international courts and advisory opinions in promoting climate justice, with a focus on the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Ambassador H.E Cheryl Bazard took part in the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) event titled “Promoting Climate Justice: The Role of International Courts and Advisory Opinions.” The event brought together experts to discuss the critical role of international legal mechanisms in addressing the urgent global issue of climate change.
Ambassador Bazard joined a distinguished panel of speakers, including Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh, Ilan Kiloe, Jule Schnakenberg, and Frederique Holle. The panel was moderated by Fabricio Guariglia, Director of IDLO, who guided the discussion on the significant aspects of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea’s Advisory Opinion (ITLOSAO) and its broader implications.
During the panel, Ambassador Bazard highlighted the unique vulnerabilities and legal challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the context of climate change. She also explored how the ITLOSAO, along with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), plays a crucial role in advancing climate justice for these vulnerable nations.
